Smokejumpers are firefighters that work in the wildland who specialize in parachuting to fires in remote areas. Smokejumping is a competitive occupation. There are about 400 individuals employed as smokejumpers nationwide. Someone interested in this career must have training as firefighters, two or more years of experience is usually preferred. Service in an elite hot-shot firefighting crew improves your chance of being chosen. These elite crews are more physically fit than average firefighters and have extensive experience in working in isolated and rugged areas.
Smokejumpers usually work from to June until October and there are physical requirements that must be met. During times when there are few fires, smokejumpers perform other duties to protect the forests. If you enjoy working outside, like to travel, and want a job that is physical and exciting (yet dangerous), smokejumping may be the career for you.
